Fiji Sevens retain nine of the Gold Coast Sevens winning squad as they head to Dubai Sevens as defending champions

NINE members of the Vodafone 7s team that won the Gold Coast 7s in Australia have been retained for the HSBC IRB Dubai and South Africa 7s tournaments.

NINE members of the Vodafone 7s team that won the Gold Coast 7s in Australia have been retained for the HSBC IRB Dubai and South Africa 7s tournaments.

This was confirmed by head coach Ben Ryan yesterday.

The nine players are captain Osea Kolinisau, Apisai Domolailai, Semi Kunatani, Jasa Veremalua, Isake Katonibau, Jerry Tuwai, Vatemo Ravouvou, Savenaca Rawaca and Apisalome Waqatabu.

"The nine players that featured at the Gold Coast 7s are injury-free and they certainly made the cut for Dubai," said Ryan.

"We had another six to seven players that are doing well at training and were fighting for the three available spots.

"I am happy with the players' fitness"

Ryan who guided the team to their first ever Dubai victory last year said defending the title would be a huge challenge for the team.

He said players had been urged to lift their performance in Dubai as all teams would want to wrest the title from Fiji.

"Going into Dubai as defending champion and top seeding is a huge challenge for the players and we need to raise the bar.

"Every tournament is tough and we just have to control the uncontrollable.

He said the side needed to continue the momentum from the Gold Coast 7s and to reach their goal of being in the Top 4 by the end of the series.

Under Ryan's one-year leadership, Fiji has won the Japan 7s, Dubai and Gold Coast 7s tournaments. The final 12-member team for Dubai 7s will be announced today at the Uprising Resort in Deuba at 12midday.

The team will depart on Wednesday 26th November to acclimatise in Abu Dhabi before the tournament in Dubai.
